Equipment Recommendations
Gekiken, the sparring component of kenjutsu, takes many forms. Every school of kenjutsu will have its own requirements related to gekiken equipment. In my dōjō, we practice full-contact gekiken, which means equipment is paramount to reduce the risk of injury. Below I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various arms and armaments, but be warned:
Gekiken is dangerous, and no amount of equipment can eliminate the risk of serious injury or death. The knowledge below comes out of my own experience, yet I make no guarantees or warranties regarding the consequences of using any of the equipment discussed. You are the sole party responsible for your safety, and you are the sole party liable for any negative outcomes.
